German Public Holidays at a Glance

Germany has 9 nationwide public holidays that apply to all federal states: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, German Unity Day, Christmas Day and 2nd Day of Christmas. In addition, each state has its own regional holidays — for example Epiphany in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, or Reformation Day in the northern and eastern states.

Bavaria and Saarland lead the ranking with 13 public holidays per year, while Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Lower Saxony have only 10. Our interactive calendar shows you exactly which holidays apply in your state.

School Vacations by Federal State

School vacation dates in Germany are set by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (KMK) and vary significantly between states. The staggering of summer vacations is intended to prevent traffic jams and overcrowding at vacation destinations.

Typical vacation periods include autumn vacations, Christmas vacations, winter vacations, Easter vacations, Whitsun vacations and summer vacations. Use the filter above to compare vacations across multiple states — particularly useful for families with partners working in different regions.
